Duane Carlisle was promoted to the 49ers Head Strength and Conditioning coach on January 9, 2008, after spending the previous three seasons as the team’s assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Carlisle is responsible for overseeing the team’s comprehensive strength and conditioning program, which includes strength, power development, speed, recovery and regeneration, and the nutritional program for the players. He brings an individual oriented approach to the strength and conditioning position, but within a team-based context.

Carlisle will look to implement many new ideas into San Francisco’s strength and conditioning program, like state of the art equipment that will help maximize performance and minimize injuries.

During Carlisle’s three seasons as an assistant, he served under legendary strength and conditioning coach Johnny Parker, a three-time Super Bowl champion and 20-year NFL veteran. Like Parker, Carlisle believes a great strength and conditioning program should never leave Head Coach Mike Nolan worried about what condition the players are in.

Carlisle plans to apply all the lessons he learned from Parker now that he is in charge of the program. Parker wanted the players to be tough, well-conditioned, and physically strong. To get there, he pushed and inspired them, to get more out of them than what they were willing to give otherwise. He cared about the players, and got them to work together as a team. After three years under Parker, those are some of the core philosophies that Carlisle will carry on.

During the 2006 and 2007 off-seasons, Carlisle helped direct the team’s spring/summer conditioning program, which was a tremendous success, garnering nearly 100 percent participation. The 14-week progression of exercises is designed to build muscle size, strength and stamina while keying on position-specific speed and proper nutrition.

His experience before coming to the 49ers includes four teams among three different professional sports, ranging from the high school to the professional level. Having trained so many different types of athletes in the past, Carlisle brings a unique perspective to the typical NFL strength and conditioning program.

Carlisle recently served as the speed development consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles (2000-04), after starting his career there as a strength and conditioning intern in 1995 and a seasonal assistant from 1996-97. While with the Eagles, who made three consecutive appearances in the NFC Championship game, Carlisle helped Westbrook gain the speed and stamina necessary to become one of the NFL’s elite running backs.

As the president and founder of Lightning Fast Training Systems, Carlisle is one of the leaders in the area of athletic performance training. He has spent the last 14 years pushing athletes to perform to their maximum potential. He prepared various NFL stars for the NFL Scouting Combine, like Philadelphia RB Brian Westbrook and DE Trent Cole, Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck, and New England C Dan Koppen.

He was also the head speed, strength and conditioning coach for the Philadelphia Charge of the Women’s United Soccer Association and the speed, strength and conditioning consultant for Major League Lacrosse’s New Jersey Pride (2001-2003). Additionally, Carlisle was the speed development coordinator with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1997-98) and the sprint and jump coach at Penn State University. Carlisle has also served as the director of strength and conditioning at the prestigious Lawrenceville Boarding School in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Carlisle starred in track and field at the University of Maryland. He graduated with an emphasis in economics and physical education.

Carlisle is married to Shereese, and has four children.
